The Galva News Date: January 10, 1929 MRS. JONAS K. OLSON, ORIGINAL COLONIST BISHOP HILL, PASSES Death Occurs This Morning After Stroke Suffered Saturday. Mrs. Jonas K. Olson, 90, one of the few surviving original colonists of the Bishop Hill community, died at 1 o'clock this morning at her home south of the Colony Town, following a stroke of paralysis which she suffered Saturday morning. Until just recently she had been in good health, and very active and alert. She celebrated her 90th birthday November 2. Funeral services will be held from the Bishop Hill community church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. H. W. Willing, her pastor, will be in charge.

Before her death, Mr. and Mrs. Olson were the only surviving married couple of the early pioneer days in Bishop Hill.

Sketch of Life.

The deceased was born in Alfta, Sweden, November 2, 1838. With her parents and brothers and sisters she sailed from Sweden June 25, 1846, at the age of seven, arriving here four months later after a perilous journey, on October 28, after being on the water 13 weeks. They were among the first settlers to arrive in the colony.

Two brothers died while enroute to this country, and were buried at sea and a sister had to give up her pass port at the last minute before sailing to the nursemaid bringing the two children of Eric Jansen; the religious leader.

In her girlhood days in the colony Mrs. Olson was one of the dairy maids assisting in the manufacture of hundreds of pounds of butter weekly, which was used in the settlement, She also helped during the building of the "Big Brick," which was destroyed by fire a year ago.

Married-In 1867.

On June 10, 1867, she was united in marriage to Jonas, K. Olson. Two daughters, Amanda and Olive, died in their childhood. Surviving are her husband, and an adopted daughter, Amanda, besides several nieces and a host of friends.

Her husband, who survives, is in active good health. He came to this country shortly after Mrs. Olson had arrived, with his parents, a brother and sister. During the early colony days he served as an ox boy, and relates many interesting experiences of pioneer life.

In their 60 years of married life Mr, and Mrs. Olson were always deeply interested in church work, and gave generously to the Methodist church of Bishop Hill and different missions. They have made their home on a farm south of Bishop Hill for a number of years.
