Katie Ellis Kersey, born August 4, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Julia Chester Ellis, died May 20, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Kersey was born in Bulloch County and graduated from Portal High School. She retired from the Savannah Public Library in 1990 and returned to Bulloch County. She lived in Statesboro until 2010, when, for health reasons, she moved to Commerce to be near her children. Mrs. Kersey was a member of First Baptist Church in Statesboro and was enrolled in the Frances Moulder Faith Sunday School Class. A talented seamstress, she joined Caring Threads, a ministry of the church that provides hand-crocheted and knitted articles that are shipped to, and distributed by, missionaries to needy children. She also made "chemo caps" that were distributed locally to cancer patients. Mrs. Kersey is pre-deceased by five sisters and a brother. She is survived by her children, Katherine (Marion) Pacetti of Gastonia, N.C., Frank Kersey of Savannah, Nancy Burdsal of Commerce, Glenn (Peggy) Kersey of Fayetteville and Mark (Laurie) Kersey of Calhoun. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Audrey D. Gladin of Savannah and Eulene "Rusty" and Ford Bailey of Statesboro; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Statesboro, on Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m. with Susan Allen, minister of children, presiding, with inurnment at Bulloch Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Caring Threads of First Baptist Church, Statesboro, Georgia. Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce.
