BIOGRAPHY The von Reibnitz family, which belongs to the ancient nobility (Uradel) of Silesia, in all likelihood stems from the Vikings who came to Silesia from the Baltic Sea. According to one source, the first von Reibnitz came to Silesia in the retinue of St. Hedwig von Meran, daughter of Berthold VI von Andechs, duke of Meran and Dalmatia, who married Henryk I 'the Bearded', Herzog von Schlesien und Krakau about 1186. This, however, cannot be authenticated.

According to another source, in 1241 three members of the family were said to have fought in the Battle of Wahlstatt against the Tartars; however, other sources question whether any of the participants in that battle are known by name. The first authenticated mention of the family name originates from the year 1271.

The name, in the oldest times von Rybicz, Rybnicz, Ribenicz, Reybnicz, Reibnicz, in East Prussia occasionally also Reibitz, probably derives from two villages of the name 'Reibnitz' still in existence. One of these, in the Breslau district, which was formerly called 'Rybnicz' and belonged from 1288 to 1808 to the bishopric of the Holy Cross in Breslau, gave its name to Jesco de Rybicz, mentioned in the year 1271, while the other village Reibnitz in the Hirschberg district, formerly written as 'Rybnicz', shared its name with Henricus de Rybnicz listed in the year 1288 as a witness in Hirschberg.

Jesco de Rybicz and Henricus de Rybnicz are considered to represent the first recorded generation of the family. It is not known how they were related.

The second generation is represented by the knight Konrad von Rybenicz (mentioned 1307 to 1337), Diprand von Rybenicz (mentioned 1311) and Peter von Rybenicz (mentioned 1317). It is again not known how they are related.

By an unnamed wife, Konrad is recorded as having a son Konrad who would have progeny. He may also have had Hans (who would have progeny), Heinrich and Nickolaus, though that is not certain.
