Kumaragupta III was emperor at the end of the Gupta Empire. He probably succeeded his father Narasimhagupta around 535. At this time the power of Guptas had shrunk to their original power base in Magadha. The demise of the imperial power is also reflected in the ever smaller percentage of gold in the coins that were issued. Stamps bearing the name of Kumaragupta III are found in Nalanda and Bithari. On these stamps also appear names of his father and grandfather, Purugupta. Kumaragupta III was succeeded by his son Vishnu Gupta around 540, who was probably the last Gupta emperor.
