About LCpl. Albert Samuel Wasley

Albert Samuel Wasley was born in Midhirst, Taranaki on 1 December 1888 (reg. 1889/18125), the youngest of nine children. His parents were Edwin Davis and Ellen Wasley (nee Betteridge) who married at St Mary in Gloucester, England on 11 July 1867. Albert was employed as a bushman for the Tauranga Sawmilling Company. His mother, Ellen, died in Tauranga on 23 November 1908 at the age of 65 (reg. 1908/6920). She was buried in Tauranga Anglican Cemetery. Albert was living at Oropi when he enlisted to served during World War I on 9 February 1916. He embarked for the United Kingdom with the 13th Reinforcements on 27 May 1916 and entered active service in France on 13 August 1916 as a Private, 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. Lance Corporal Albert Samuel Wasley was killed in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917 during the opening phases of the Battle of Passchendaele, but has no known grave. He was aged 28. Albert is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial at Tyne Cot Cemetery in Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Albert named his next-of-kin as his uncle, Mr William Wasley, of Hawera. His medals, the British War Medal and Victory Medal, were forwarded in 1922 to his father Edwin. In his will he left his estate equally to his brothers and sisters.
