Comer Board was born in Axbridge, Somerset, England on 21 October 1881. Although his birth appears in the Jan/Feb/March 1882 registrations, he was baptised at Brean in Somerset on 6 December 1881 by Rev. Joseph Hallifax. Comer's parents were Albert Say Board (1855-1930) and Jane Board (nee Comer) (1857-1944) who married at St Christopher in Lympsham, Somerset, on 20 May 1879. The family emigrated to New Zealand, arriving on board the Tongariro on 30 May 1885. When Comer signed up to serve during World War I, his parents were living at Waitomo Caves in the Waikato Region. Comer's younger brother Arthur Board (1889-1916) was killed in action at the Somme on 26 November 1916 when a mortar exploded. Comer was killed in action in Belgium on 7 June 1917. He was 35 years of age.
