About LCpl. Thomas Leslie Lochhead
Thomas Leslie Lochhead was born in Dunsandel in Canterbury on 2 October 1889. His parents were Thomas and Elizabeth Wilson Lochhead (nee Low) who married in Dunsandel on 2 September 1885. The family later moved to a farm in Te Puna, Tauranga. Thomas farmed for his father at Te Puna. He also played football and the bagpipes and was a member of the Tauranga Agricultural Association. Thomas enlisted to serve during World War I at Trentham on 26 July 1916. He was with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, A Company, 2nd Battalion (Service No. 32019). On 13 April 1918 Thomas was made Lance Corporal. His younger brother, William Harcourt Lochhead, died of his wounds in Palestine on 11 May 1918. Thomas was killed in action at Bapaume in France on 26 August 1918, aged 27. He was buried in Achiet-le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas-de-Calais, France. Source: Biography by Debbie McCauley.
