Robert Jr and LaVerne moved from Missouri to Oakland, CA during WWII, where Robert began working at the docks supporting the war effort. Eventually, they moved approximately 70 miles west to the coastal city of Santa Cruz, CA. Always a petite woman, LaVerne was nevertheless strong spirited and forward-looking. Her strength carried her and her family through the small and large tragedies that impacted their lives. When Robert died unexpectedly, still very young, LaVerne became the head of a growing family that included a son still in school (Jan Lynn) and a son (Robert N. III) and daughter (Vicky) each starting their own young families. At her core, LaVerne was a 'pull yourselves up by your bootstraps' person - rarely complaining, simply moving forward the best she knew how. Her doors were always open; her family often spent as much time at her house as their own.
