About Lady Margaret Davenport
Margaret Fraser Cleland - Lady Margaret Davenport
Another of South Australia's oldest pioneers, Lady Davenport, wife of Sir Samuel Davenport, died on Thursday. She came to the state with her husband about 1842. After their arrival in this state they went to Macclesfield, where they remained for a number of years. In 1852 Sir Samuel and Lady Davenport went to London, and on their return they settled at Beaumont, where they have resided ever since. Lady Davenport had for some years been in bad health, which prevented her from visiting friends and attending outside functions. She will be remembered as a philanthropist, and one who took a great interest in benevolent institutions, particularly the servants' home and the State Children's Department. In her latter work she was closely associated with the late Lady Colton and Miss Clark. Prior to her marriage with Sir Samuel the deceased was Miss Cleland. and her brother was Mr. John Cleland, formerly Registrar-General of Births, Marriages, and Deaths.
