Biography Philippe Dalyngruge was born in 1398. Some sources say Philippe was born at Bodiam, Sussex, England, but this is unlikely, as Bodiam came into the Dallingridge family by the marriage of her uncle, Sir Edward Dallingridge to Elizabeth, the daughter and heir of John Wardieu of Sywell, Northants. and Bodiam.[1] Philippe was the daughter of Walter (Dallingridge) Dalyngruge and his wife, Margaret Chamond, the relict of William Mowbray, who married as her third husband, William Cheyney.[2] [3] Previously, Philippa's father was thought to be Sir Edward Dalyngrigge,[4][5] [6] however, Sir Edward and his wife, Elizabeth, had only one daughter,[1] Margaret, who was married to Sir Thomas Sackville of Buckhurst in Withyham, Sussex.[7] Philippe was the sister of:[2] Richard Dalyngridge, aged 15 in 1408-9, (aged 21 years and more on 20 May 1420[3]), died without children on 7 January, 10 Edward IV, 1470/1, Inq P M at Chichester, on 5 October 11 Edward IV; William Dalyngruge, died without children before 1443; Philippe, through her mother's previous marriage, was the half-sister of: Eleanor Moubray;[3] Phillipa married twice: Richard Berners,[8] died 6 August 14 Henry IV,[9] with whom she had children: Margery Berners,[8] born at West Horsley, Surrey, on 30 November, 1408,[10] married 1) John Fereby, esq, who died 10 October 1441, and 2) John Bourchier;[11] Thomas Leukenor,[8] by 1417,[9] at Bodiam, Sussex, England, with whom she had children: Sir Roger Lewknor, who succeeded his uncle, Richard Dalyngridge; As Margery Berners, Philippa's daughter with her first husband Richard Berners, was born on 30 November, 1408, Philippa's marriage to Richard occurred before that date. An Inquisition was held for Richard Berners in Suffolk in 5 Henry V which has been lost, but "Edmund Winter, escheator, recorded that Richard Berners held the manor of Icklingham in Suffolk in demesne as of fee of Lucy, countess of Kent by knight service, that it was worth £8 a year, and that he died on 6 August 14 Henry IV; and that since that date two-thirds of the manor had been occupied by Lucy and the other third by Thomas Leukenore, knight, and Philippa his wife (Richard's widow).[10. E 136/126/3.]"[9] Philippa widow of Thomas Leukenor died on 2 October 1420, and her heir was Margery, her daughter with Richard Berners.[8] At her death three Inquisitions at West Horsley, Surrey, on 7 November 1420, at Islington, Middlesex, on 4 December 1421, and at Icklingham, Surrey, on 13 November 1421.[8] On 22 June 1417, Sir John Dalyngruge, the son of Sir Edward Dalyngruge, made his will entailing the Bodiam estate on his cousins, the children of his uncle Walter Dalyngruge, excluding his sister's children by Sir Thomas Sackville, and when Sir John died without children, Bodiam passed to Phillipa's brother, Richard, then her son, Roger.[12] However, Sir John Dalyngrigge actually died on 26 September 1408, although at the inquisition taken after the death of his widow, Alice, in February 1442, a will of Sir John Dalyngrigge was quoted as being dated on 22 June 5 Henry V (1417), "presumably this is a slip for 5 Henry IV (1404)" and the manor of Raddingdean was left to William, Sir John's younger cousin, who had predeceased Alice and had no children so the manor reverted to his brother, Richard. Richard Dalyngrigge died in 1471 having bequeathed the manor of Raddingdeanit to his nephew Sir Roger Lewkenor, the son of his sister Philippa.[13]
