The Schröder family in Porvoo Professor Olav Panelius, Porvoo The family has been represented in Porvoo since the end of the 16th century, but the name Schröder only appears in the records towards the end of the 17th century. Johan Schröder in 1693, Mats Schröder in 1694 and the court book for Porvoo and Hollola include Jochim Schröder in 1695.

The Schröder family played a prominent role in the city's economic and municipal life for a century and a half. Among the merchants were at least six Schrödrs, one was mayor and five sat as councilors in court. Through marriage to many of the more significant Porvoo families, the Schrödrarna came to connect the social stratum of the city. With councilor Petter Schröder, the family reached a final flowering. After that, it dropped rapidly on the social ranking scale. Petter's son Petter Marqvardt and his daughter Lovisa enjoyed support from the poor fund during their last years of life. Of his grandchildren, only the chaplain Johan Dietrich and the trade bookkeeper Petter rose above the proletarian level.

For members of the family, the place of birth, marriage and death is Porvoo, unless otherwise stated. For married people, the place is stated if it is known.

[2] Margareta Larsdotter, defendant in a property dispute on February 30, 1628, was acc. rpr with this date sister of Hans Larsson, who there is called Erik Wast's brother-in-law. She owned a crib, which belonged to her brother Hans Larsson's children and which their stepfather, councilor Mats Matsson, claimed on their behalf. This shows that Mats Matsson was Hans Larsson's successor matrimonii. His wife Margareta Eriksdotter was a sister of Mats Eriksson Wast, which appears from the account of a dispute about the inheritance after Mats Matsson in rpr 7.10.1667. Margareta Larsdotter had been married to the skinner Jöns Matsson, which is indirectly proven by the fact that the law reader Per Jönsson in rpr 29.3.1669 is said to be "brother-in-law" to Samuel Magni Schillerus, married to Enwald Larsson's daughter Catharina, a niece of Margareta Larsdotter.Per Jönsson was a son of Jöns Matsson and from the family relationship to Enwald Larsson one can thus conclude that his mother was Margareta Larsdotter. According to rpr 20.9.1623 she was a widow even then. - On family relationships, see also O. Panelius, Farms and farm owners in Porvoo, pp. 29 f and 45 f.

[3] The daughters' marriage is clarified in several contexts, including rpr 20.8.1655, 5.7.1658 and 2.8.1658.

[4] See rpr 22.9.1652 and 26.9.1674; in rpr 22.6.1674 Enwald Larsson is called "an elderly man"; his employment as a caretaker is mentioned in Porvoo and Hollola district court register 1674, p. 101.

[5] Rpr 14.1.1657.

[6] Rpr 27.3.1675; The information about Carsten's approximate date of death has been given by Dr. Henrik Borgström.

[7] Catharina Wast is mentioned as Jochim Schröder's widow in rpr 26.9.1693.

[8] Rpr 19.6.1711; in rpr 22.1.1693 Johan Schröder is mentioned as the brother-in-law of Willam von Werdt.

[9] Catharina Schröder's marriage is mentioned in rpr 31.10.1730 and 17.7.1731.

[10] According to a deed of purchase dated 10 Oct 1735, the merchant Petter Schröder was allowed to take over the late merchant Augustus Hoppe's farm at Torget, which Madame Margareta Schröder sold. In rpr 21.2.1728 she is mentioned as Hope's widow.

[11] Rpr 3.4.1709 and 16.6.1711.

[12] Jochim Schröder sold the town hall to the tailor Erik Casselius according to rpr 14.10.1701. The purchase of the property in Särkjärvi is recorded in Porvoo and Hollola district court register 1695, p. 42 f.

[13] By all accounts, Jochim Jochimsson had been married before. His eldest son Joachim was according to Porvoo ddbk at his death 15.12.1762 81 years old and thus born about 1681, if the information is correct. But then Elisabet Bengtsdotter's first husband Johan Kullberg was still alive and was perhaps not yet married, because he is currently recorded under his father Christer Jöransson (Kullberg).

[14] The filiation is completed by the following information: In rpr 7.3.1744 Joachim and Henrik Schröder are mentioned as brothers and in mtl 1724 Henrik S. is taken together with his sisters Catharina and Anna. The latter is in 1722 under his father Jochim, who according to rpr 3.6.1751 was Henrik Schröder's father.

[15] Catharina Winter is mentioned together with her husband Mats Wast in rpr 2.4.1722, but as his widow in mtl 1724 and 1727. Already in mtl 1729 Joachim Schröder is married to his wife Catharina, who in rpr 22.11.1738 is called Caisa Winter.

[17] Maria Schröder's family relationship with the Schröders in Porvoo is evident from the fact that her son Carl Johan Fischer in the Porvoo Communion Book 1749-1764 is under councilor Henrik Schröder and is stated there as his nephew. Under Petter Schröder are the shop assistants Otto Wilhelm and Petter Fischer, who were brothers of Carl Johan. See also Jutikkala-Nikander, Manors and Estates in Finland I p 518.

[23] Christina (Stina) Andersdotter appears in the church registers with various incorrect names and years of birth. The errors have been corrected in the communion book for Porvoo mother church parish 1803-12 p 304 and in the remarks column it has been noted that she was born in Ylike on 14 Novemb. 1749. In the baptismal book for the latter year and with this date, a girl child is included as the daughter of the soldier Anders Fallström and Maria Henriksdotter in Ylike.

[24] In rpr 23.10.1734, Mathias Schröder himself states that he was then 76 years old.

[27] Mathias Schröder's three marriages are mentioned in rpr 12.12.1730. - At the time around the turn of the century 1600-1700, a citizen Johan Michelenius or Mechelin lived in Porvoo. He is mentioned in rpr 2.6.1697 as a fire inspector and then with the first-mentioned form of name, in mtl 1703-08 he appears as the citizen Johan Mechelin. In all probability, Mathias Schröder's first wife Catharina was a relative of his. As Johan Mechelin's age is not known, it is uncertain in what family relationship they were related to each other. She may have been his daughter, as well as probably the Stina Michalenia mentioned in rpr 6.12.1735. See also O. Panelius, Farms and farm owners in Porvoo p. 34. - Maria Westman, who in 1734 according to the man was "utlefwad", must have been about his age and was perhaps a daughter of the city secretary Isak Westman, who appears in mtl 1663- 1666 - Rpr 23.10.1734. On Sabina Elisabet Falkenfelt's family relationships, see Jully Ramsay, Salvation Family in Finland next to the Great Unrest, p. 106 and rpr 7.4.1709 and rpr 23.10.1709, where her mother (stepmother?) Is called Anna Juliana Richter.

[28] Mathias Schröder had with his first wife five children, who lived at the estate register after her in 1705. This is evident from rpr 6.2.1723, when Schröder's son-in-law Captain Christian Johan Bröijer guarded his deceased wife, Sabina Schröder's inheritance rights. Apart from Sabina, only her sister Stina can be identified with certainty as a daughter of Mathias S. However, it is possible that Anna Schröder, who was married to the quartermaster, later Lieutenant Gustaf Hindsberg in Mörskom, can be counted as a third daughter. See Note 31. Two more persons with the name Schröder can be mentioned in this context, although no evidence of their affiliation with the Schröders in Porvoo can be presented. I Kongl. Ostrobothnia's infantry regiment served as a volunteer at Kemi company and later as a sergeant at Pyhäjoki company a Mathias Schröder b. About 1697 in Uusimaa . He was fired on 4.5.1730. A sergeant Schröder is mentioned in dpbk for Askola chapel in 1730 as the father of a daughter Carin. CB. J. Petander, Kungl. The Ostrobothnian Regiment 1723-1771 p. 223. - In the general pattern roll for the Uusimaa Infantry Regiment 1735, Corporal No. 44 Hindrik Schröder at Grevnäs in Mörskom is included in its life company. The first names are known within the Schröder family and two, perhaps three of Mathias Schröder's daughters were married to the military. Although these circumstances could indicate a relationship with the Schrödrarna in Porvoo, the affiliation is of course extremely uncertain.

[29] That Christina Schröder, gm Johan Elers, was a daughter of Mathias S. is supported by the fact that she shared a field in Porvoo with the rust master (Erik Adolf) Bröijer, a nephew of Christina. This is stated in a letter of purchase drawn up between Petter Schröder and Sergeant Claes Johan Elers. Appendix to rpr 5.12.1759. See also K. Wirilander, Officer and non-commissioned officer in the Finnish Army 1718-1810. Suomen hist. seuran Käsikirjoja III. Helsinki 1953; Genos 33 s 83.

[31] Lieutenant Hindsberg together with Mrs. Schröder and the daughters Caisa, Stina and Hedvig are under Skomarböle in the communion book for Mörskom 1740-62. In dpbk for the same parish is included under Skyttas, Backby housing officer Mr. quartermaster Hindsberg and Anna Schröder's children Christina, b. 28.4.1718, but in ddbk for Askola the quartermaster Hindsberg's dear wife Margareta Bock is recorded as dead 19.11.1729. These data show that the quartermaster Hindsberg must have been married three times. The Anna Schröder who was the mother of Christina b. 1718 cannot be identical with Anna Jochimsdotter, who as late as 1722 is recorded under her father Jochim Jochimsson in mtl. Then the closest alternative is that she was a daughter of Mathias S. and that she died after 1718.

Porvoon Schröder-suku . Porvoon pormestarista Lars Enwaldssonista (main. Sukunimen ottivat ensimmäisinä kolmanteen polveen kuuluvan raatimiehen Jochim Enwaldssonin (main. 1657-82) pojat, kauppias Jochim Schröder (kn 1723) ja raatimies Mathias Schröder (k. 1737). Edellisen poikia olivat raatimiehet Henrik Schröder (k. 1762) ja Petter Schröder (k. 1772), jonka lastenlapsiin mieskantainen Schröder-suku lienee päättynyt.
