About Lars "Thomasen" Thompson

Information from "Saga of Battle River" the History book published in 1986 and family members.

Lars Thompson was born in Lillehammer, Norway on May 2,1887. He was the Third generation of the family to come to Canada and farm the same Quarter of land NE 34-12-27-W4. In 1901 Great Granddad Thompson came to Alberta from Devils Lake, North Dakota, USA. Granddad And Grandma Thompson and son Nil’s came from Norway in 1907 and Lars came in 1906.

On August 17, 1906 Lars boarded the 'Virginian' in Liverpool,England and arrived in Canada at the port in Montreal, Quebec on August 24, 1906.

Lars worked on the Canadian Pacific Railway for a few years and Thea Anderson cooked at the farm of C.S Noble, inventor of the Noble blade at Nobleford Alberta. She also cooked for N. Olson and Ole Amundson. Thea Anderson and Lars Thompson were married November 17, 1908. They Homesteaded at Sundial Alberta and lived there until 1930 during this time eleven children were born, Lena ( born in Sundial ), Thora, Alf, Claude, Harold, Clara, Thelma, Oscar, Ethel and Doris ( all born in Claresholm ).

In 1916 Lars bought a farm five miles east of Claresholm and in 1929 sold it. In July 1929 Lars, Henry Johnson, Ole Galde and Ole Lundgard came to Peace River where they met John Green, who told them to come to Jim Creek. Lars Filled on NE 25-90-24-W5, which turned out to be the greatest rock pile in the district.

Lars went back to Claresholm in August 1929 and returned to the Peace Country the latter part of October. His daughter Thora, son Claude and Henry Johnson accompanied him. They built a shack, which was latter moved to his son’s Alf quarter, two miles west of the Deadwood Store.

Lars returned to Claresholm in December 1929 and in the spring of 1930 he moved his family to the Peace country. They traveled in a McLaughlin Buick and a Studebaker. The machinery, horses, cattle and household effects were sent by train to Grimshaw. Due to flooding of the Whitemud River they were unable to go any further so they stayed with the Condrotte family three miles north of Grimshaw for about one mouth. Then they crossed the river by boat at the old Whitemud Crossing.

Using a horse drawn maintainer, Lars maintained the Deadwood road and the Highway from North Star to a point six miles north of Dixonville. He also installed culverts and did some bridge work.

Lars and Thea enjoyed music; Ethel and Doris won awards for singing at school music festivals. The older children belonged to Dick Nordquist’s band. They travelled to Deadwood and other schools where they played for dances and social events and received 25 or 50 cents for an evening for their music. Thea and Lars made a home in North Star area until 1942 then returned to the Thompson farm east of Claresholm. Thea and Lars were married for 68 Years and after Lars death on December 7,1976. Thea continued to live on the farm until 1988. She then returned north to live on with family, spending the last year in the Manning Hospital where she passed away peacefully November 25, 1992.

An infant son predeceased Thea and Lars.

Harold married Louella Braaten of North Star.

Clara married George Frith of Deadwood.

Thelma married Maurice Thibault.

Thora married Godfred Pearson.

Ethel married Wilf Judson .

Doris married Gordon Bratz.

Claude lived in Deadwood.

Oscar Lived in Claresholm.

Alf has passed away.
