Area Deaths: Laurene Callaway

BROKEN BOW -- Laurene A. Callaway, 81, of Broken Bow died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. J. Green will officiate. Burial will be in the Ainsworth Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Callaway was born on Dec. 18, 1916, at Correctionville, Iowa, to Charles and Mamie [Wells] Scott. She grew up in Correctionville.

She married Donald Frazier on Sept. 30, 1936, and moved to Glendale, Calif. She moved back to Correctionville in 1938. She spent the war years in Sioux City, Iowa, working as a machinist for Albertson Tool Co.

She married Homer Babbitt on Dec. 18, 1942. They moved from Sioux City to Norfolk in 1945 and to Ainsworth in 1951. Mr. Babbitt died in 1959.

She married Connie Callaway on Aug. 19, 1960. Mr. Callaway died in May 1982, and Mrs. Callaway spent many winters in Georgia with her daughter, Marilyn, and in Arizona with her son, Gary. She also spent much time at the ranch in Elsmere with her daughter, Carolyn.

She moved to Custer Heights in Broken Bow on June 15, 1993.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Does Drove 54 and Women's Bowling Association. She also was a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include two sons, Steve Babbitt of Broken Bow and Gary Babbitt of Sutherlin, Ore.; three daughters, Marilyn Shehee of Ashburn, Ga., Scottie Caldwell of Norcross, Ga., and Nancy Drent of Pickrell; five stepchildren; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Opal Siefke and Maye Small, both of Washta, Iowa.

Besides two of her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, Homer "Skip"; one daughter, Carolyn; one grandson; three brothers; and one sister.
