Laurence Petitt

Laurence Petitt, 78, of Spearfish, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at his daughters home in Nisland.

Visitation Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m., at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish, with Pastor Darren Purdy officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Laurence was born on Feb. 27, 1927, in Pollack. He lived in Hill City, until the age of 12. He moved to Prairie City and lived out north herding sheep and farming.

He married Mary Rose Kaubisch on May 11, 1944, in Sturgis. The couple made their home in Whitewood before moving to Spearfish in 1947. Laurence worked for Homestake Sawmill for nine years. They moved to Sorum for two and a half years, before moving to Moorcroft, Wyo., and working in the oil fields for a few years. They moved back to Spearfish in 1960 and he was self employed, working in the timber and helping neighbors until he retired.

Laurence enjoyed fishing, listening to the radio and reading. He liked to read the Bible, various westerns, and the Jean M. Auel series.

Laurence was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, two sons, Billy Lee and Gerald Dean, his sister and his brother.

Survivors include eight daughters and five sons; Hester Milks, of Prineville, Ore., Christopher Petitt, of Kingsville, Mo., Henry Petitt, of Nevada, Mo., Larry Petitt, of Nom Teng, Thialand, Edith Petitt, of Short Hills, N.J., Shirley Sneed, of Longview, Texas, Rose Ella Thomas, Rochester, N.Y., Sharon Chanove, of Knob Noster, Mo., Toni Kidd, of Nisland, Edward Petitt, of Grand Junction, Colo., Sheila Barry, of Tobyhanna, Pa., Patrick Petitt, of Spearfish, and Barbie Sweet, of Rhinelander, Wis. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
