About Lawrence Hilliard
English miniature painter, the son of Nicholas Hilliard (qv). He was married in 1611 to Jane Farmer at the church of St Saviour's Southwark. It was from Lawrence that Charles I received the portrait of Queen Elizabeth now kept at Montagu House, although the portrait was probably created by his father. The younger artist used more florid writing in his inscriptions than his father, and more varied colour schemes, but few of them have survived. He died in the Parish in which he had lived and worked, leaving his wife and four children.
