Lawrence Mangan

GEDCOM Note

Lawrence Mangan's family came from Ireland to the U.S. in 1852 and settled in Xenia, Ohio. He was first married in Ohio and his first wife, Catherine WALSH, died in 1866 after the Civil War. Lawrence Mangan's oldest brother, John Mangan had traveled south during the Civil War and had fought for the Confederacy with an Corinth Rifles, a Misssissippi regiment. He was later to settle in Texarkana, Texas. Lawrence Mangan traveled south to Tennesee were he met his second wife, Mary Jane White of McNairy County, The Mangan family is buried in the Phalba Cemetery 12 miles S.W. of Canton, Texas. The cemetery is located at Phalba about 100 yards off the mainroad. The cemetery dates back to the 1860's with very some very old locally made headmarkers. The Lawrence Mangan family experienced a great deal of death of children in their family as noted by the headmarkers. At the 1900 census, she had indicated that she was born in November of 1859 and was 40 at her last birthday. she also said she was born in Illionois. The family story is that after his second wife, Mary Jane White Mangan died, he placed an advertisement in the Canton, Van Zandt County Newpaper looking for a bride. Catherine apparently answered the advertisement, but so far her maiden name is lost. She went to Denver, CO after Lawrence Mangan's death and I have not been able to locare her information.
