Two Killed at R.R. Crossing Young People Returning from Basketball Practice when Accident Occurred
Two young people were instantly killed and two were injured Wednesday night of last week, near Broadway, at the Erie railroad crossing on the Kenton-Marysville road when their automobile ran into the side of an Erie freight train.
Edwin Clark, 20, of near LaRue and Miss Leah Catherine Reed, 16, of Richwood, were instantly killed, and Miss Opal Foax, 18, of Mt. Victory, and Willis Greenwalt, 19, of near LaRue were injured and were taken immediately to McKitrick hospital at Kenton. Their injuries are not considered as critical. The two couples were riding in a coupe driven by Edwin Clark. The two girls had been in Marysville attending practice preparatory to playing in the basketball tournament last Saturday. Both were members of the Byhalia team. Miss Reed was thrown under the wheels of the train and was literally torn to pieces. Clark's head was crushed. The train crew were not aware of the accident until they reached Urbana. A truck driver, who was passing the scene of the wreck, discovered the bodies and immediately notified the Coroner J.M. Foster and Sheriff Rausch, and the relatives of the victims. The bodies of young Clark and Miss Reed were taken to Raymond to Wilbur Winter's undertaking establishment and were later brought to Richwood. Miss Reed, a junior in the Byhalia high school, was a daughter of Delmer L. Reed and Vera Matteson Reed of Richwood, and was born November 22, 1918 in Washington township. She was a member of the Richwood Baptist church, the Byhalia high school girl's basketball team and the girls' 4-H club of Washington Township. Besides her parents she leave twin sisters, Thelma M. and Wilda G. Reed at home. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock in the Winter chapel, conducted Rev. Ray Hunter of the Richwood Baptist Church. Burial in charge of Lloyd Winter & Son was made in Claibourne cemetery. Edwin Clark was a son of Silas and May Shaeffer Clark, who reside five miles south of LaRue and an only child. He was engaged in farming with his father. His parents survive. Funeral services were held in the Union Baptist Church near LaRue, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. John Forsythe. Burial was made in Price in charge of S.R. Sanders.
