Leo A. Aberle passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at the Bowdle Healthcare Center, Bowdle, South Dakota.

Leo was born on November 3, 1918, at Glencross, South Dakota. He was the eighth child of Nikolas and Anna (Schweitzer) Aberle.

He was the first baby baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, which was originally located in the Mattern Store in Glencross, South Dakota.

He attended the Aberle School near his home. He lived and farmed with his parents until his marriage. He married Magdalene Rose Hummel on October 16, 1945, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glencross, South Dakota. Leo and Maggie began their farm and ranch operation in 1953 when they purchased land southeast of the Aberle homestead. He was a grain farmer, along with a cow and calf operation.

Leo was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and later the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timber Lake, South Dakota. He was a Dewey County Commissioner from 1983 through 2001. He also served on the Soil Conservation Board for 37 years, Trail City and Glencross Rural Water Board for twenty years, and the Library Board for a number of years.

Leo is survived by children,

  • Thomas (Diana) Aberle of Glencross, South Dakota;

  • Joel Aberle of Aberdeen, South Dakota;
  • Mary (Dennis) Simons of St. Lawrence, South Dakota;
  • Harvey Aberle of Huntley, Montana;
  • Andrew Aberle of Glencross, South Dakota;
  • Irene (Wade) Moffat of Piedmont, Oklahoma;
  • Gerald (Annie) Aberle of Clear Lake, South Dakota;
  • Kenneth (Criss) Aberle, Mobridge, South Dakota;
