The Aronson family tradition of dealing in antiques and fine arts commenced in 1881 when Leon Aronson was granted permission to take a permanent stand in the antique market in Arnhem, Holland. (This market on the corner of Jansstraat still operates today.) At that time dealers were regarded more as brokers, selling on behalf of wealthy people who allowed the dealer a small commission.

Extract from the book "From rebuke to rejoicing" by Moshe Nordheim: "Leon was about 40 and comfortable off when he married with 17 year old Rebecca van Dam who came from a poor family. He had an antique shop. They had 19 children, 7 of which die d within a year of birth. Rebecca died at the time of birth of her 19th child. The responsibility of the house was taken over by their daughter Betje, at the same time also helping in her fathers shop. She married 21 year old Moos Nordheim from Amsterdam when she was 25. The shadchan was his mother's brother who was a traveller and knew Betje from his visits to Arnhem They settled in Arnhem where Moos joined in his father-in-laws antique shop. Betje was very capable and together with her husband developed the business and after the death of her father they, rather than any of her brothers, continued the business under the name Nordheim".
