About Leonard Stout Hall

Leonard S. Hall married Jeanette McGregor who was born in Ritchie County. He began the study of law and then moved to New Martinsville in 1849, where for a number of terms he held the office of prosecuting attorney for Wetzel County. Mr. Hall was a member of the Secession Convention at Richmond in 1861 and also a member of the Virginia Legislature during the civil war.

From the Wheeling Register (Wheeling, WV) Monday, 15 Nov. 1875:
The following reliable account of the sudden and quite mysterious death of L. S. Hall, Esq., of New Martinsville, will be read with sorrow by the large circle of friends who knew him. Mr. Hall was the father of Hon. Sep. Hall, of Wetzel.
Mr. Hall left home the first of the week to go back into the country about 15 miles to sell and survey some wild lands which he had. He left his horse at a man's house and started to walk across a hill through the woods to see a man with whom he had business, intending to return in an hour or two. This was about 4 p.m. Wednesday. He did not return and the next morning (Thursday) they started to hunt him, and found him lying in the woods, about one-fourth of a mile from where he first started. It is supposed that he died of apoplexy.
