MR. LESLIE W. DOUGLASS
AN old and respected identity of Windsor,
Mr. Leslie Walter Douglass passed
away in the District Hospital on Sunday at
the age of 66 years . The deceased had en
joyed comparatively good health until a
week prior to his demise, when he took ill.
He was admitted to the hospital on Satur
day suffering from an internal trouble and
died the following day. The late Mr. Doug
lass was a native of Windsor and had re
sided in the town, all his life . He was a
son of the late James Douglass, who will
be remembered by old hands as one of our
earliest carpenters. In 1909 he was married
in Sydney to Amelia Wood, who predeceas
ed him about ten years ago. The deceased
was one of the first residents of Windsor
to invest in a gramaphone, which were in
those days regarded as a novelty; and it
will be recalled that he provided many en
joyable open-air concerts with the instru
ment, with its large trumpet-shaped am
plifier, to crowds that gathered during the
summer nights in front of Steam's shop,
opposite the Royal Hotel. Mr. Douglass
was also an expert gardener, both with
flowers and vegetables, and he was employ
ed in that capacity, for many years by Mr.
J. T. Tebbutt at Observatory Hill, the Pe
ninsula, Windsor. Latterly, he had been
living in retirement, in the dwelling over
Maisey's shoe store. The funeral took place
on Monday, the remains being laid to rest
in St. Matthew's Church of England ceme
tery. Rev. N Y Jenkyn conducted the ser
vice at the graveside and Mr. Chandler was
the undertaker.
