Lev Nikolaevich (1811 - 1885), was an avid hunter and a good draftsman. As a staff captain of the guard, he was wounded during the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1830. Four years later he retired from military service, married the German Baroness Sophia Karlovna von Pirch, who was the granddaughter of the famous Platon Zubov , the last favourite of Catherine II and a participant in the conspiracy against Paul I.
The Vaxel family chose Strelna as their summer residence. Its wooded and swampy surroundings have been famous for hunting since the days of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. In addition, Sergiev's hermitage was nearby, where numerous relatives of his wife rested.
Lev Vaksel was a friend and a hunting companion of Turgenev. “You know that in Spasskoye you will be greeted with sincere cordiality and joy at any time, ” Turgenev wrote to him. When creating his hunting stories, Turgenev often consulted with Lev Waxel about the technical side of hunting description.
In 1853, Turgenev handed his collection of fiction stories "Notes of a Hunter" to Waxel, accompanied by an inscription of gratitude. What prompted him three years later to prepare a professional guide - "Pocket book for beginners to hunt with a gun and a dog." Until 1917, it went through seven reprints. Lev Vaksel devoted many pages to describing the Strelna surroundings.
