MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 0 Levi Jefferson Mills was the son of William & Celah Gardner. He married Sarah Gardner in Sparta, Georgia. They were the parents of 11 children. On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1853, Levi & Sarah and most of their children packed up for a move to Texas. They traveled to New Orleans where they boarded a ship and sailed to Galveston, Texas. Levi and Sarah both became ill during the trip. During their overland trek from Galveston to their intended destination of Brenham, Texas, (where Anna Mills Baker, Levi’s sister was living), Levi died in Houston on Jan. 22, 1854. His burial location is unknown. Some family sources indicate he was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, but that cemetery was not established until the early 1870s, so that seems unlikely.
After burying Levi, the family pressed on. Unfortunately, Sarah died two days later and was buried in Hempstead, Texas.
