:: :: Five Corners - March 4th: Levi Palmer had a very narrow escape from death one day last week while endeavoring to put on a belt in the saw mill. His clothing caught in the shaft which wound them up, whirling him through the air with tearful rapidity. The steam had just been shut off so that the shaft was not running at full speed, and but for this he must have been whipped to pieces in an instant. When taken from the shaft he only had on an under shirt. His boots having been whipped off some ribs were broken, and his extremities were badly bruised. Dr. Sanford, was immediately summoned, and administered to his wantsand says he is in a fair way of recovery. - Auburn (NY) News and Democrat March 7, 1878 :: :: Another loss to the last dwindling forces of Civil War veterans wassustained yesterday when Levi Palmer, a member of the Seward Crocker Post 37 G. A R. passed away. Born in Genoa June 11. 1846, Mr. Palmer carried to his grave a scar received when he was wounded in the Battleof the Wilderness, one of the most important conflicts of the Civil War. He was mustered into national service in 1863 as a private to Capt. Samuel Brady's Company K. 111th Regiment, New York Volunteers with Col. MacDougal commanding. On May 5th 1864 during the intense fighting at the Battle of the Wilderness (Under General Grant) he received a gunshot wound in his left arm which confined him in the Army square hospital in Washington for the summer of 1864. He later transferred to company E 18th regiment of the veterans reserve corps. With the exception of the time he spent recuperating from his wounds, Mr. Palmer participated in many engagements and achieved a gallant record for brave and soldierly conduct. He had the distinction of being selected as one of the guards who were guarding prisoners suspected of assassinatingPresident Lincoln and who attempted to murder secretary William H. Seward. There were 76 prisoners in this group among whom were Mrs. Surratt and Dr. Mudd. He was honorably discharged in Washington 7/21/1865. He is survived by a wife and one son, Lyle G. Palmer of this city. - Auburn (NY) Citizen November 14, 1923.
