About Levin Hertz
Sources: Hertz family tree by Gerard Hertz, Meaux, France, and other family letters and papers.
Lippehne, birthplace of Levin Hertz, was said to be found in Neumark, in the eastern part of the ancient province of Brandenburg, which at various times has belonged to Poland, Prussia, or Germany. It lies in present-day Poland, only 30 kilometers or so from the Oder River, northeast of Kistrin. Levin Hertz was a broker and banker. He was a partner in the Heckscher bank, along with Salomon Heine, until 1818. In 1818 he founded the Levin Hertz Bank, and was also associated with the council of administration of Hamburg's German-israelite community from 1819 to 1823. He was registered as Israelite # 51 in Hamburg. After leaving the Heckscher bank, Levin Hertz later ran into financial difficulties and Salomon Heine came to his aid. Levin was related by marriage to both his business partners Salomon Heine and Abraham Marcus Heckscher. Levin married the daughter of Abraham Marcus Heckscher, and became the father-in-law of Salomon Heine's niece Anna Heine.
