-----------------------------------
Edward Damant, (1786 - 1863) was a Lieut. in the 38th Regt. and served through the Peninsular War, taking part in the Siege of Walcheren and the storming of Badajos. Two breaches had been blown through the walls of the Badajos and so an assault was planned. The main attack was to be on the large breach while Lt. Edward Damant was to lead the 'forlorn hope' on the small breach, not a very pleasant duty. The main attack met with such strong resistance that they were unable to get through while Damant's forlorn hope stormed through the smaller breach and managed to set fire to the powder magazine. Up went the magazine and down came the flag, and Badajos was captured.
The Damant family held the manor of Lammas near Norwich for nearly a century, and some of their ancestors are buried in St. Andrew's Church, Lammas, where there are several memorial stones showing the arms of Damant impaled with Eyre, Sancroft, Guybon and Castell. Thomas Damant inherited the Manor of Lammas by his marriage with Maria, daughter and heiress of Edward Eyre (+1709).
