About Lieut Johann Jacob Leidy, Jr.

DAR Ancestor A069161 Arrived on the ship SAMUEL in Philadelphia, PA on 17 Aug 1733 with Frederich Leyday. Jacob, Jr. was 14 years old. He came into possession of his father's farm for which he obtained a patent in 1753. His tract was known as the Ashton tract and was located near the East Hatfield Twp. line, Montgomery Co., PA. In 1769 he was taxed for 260 acres in Franconia Twp., Montgomery Co., PA. This became known as Leidysburg or Leidytown and is located on Old Bethlehem Road. It contained some 20 dwellings and a Methodist Church built in 1846. (The villages of Hilltown, Line Lexington, Dublin and Leidytown are all small places. About 1810 when Henry Leidy began making hats there the village name changed to Line Lexington.) Jacob, Jr.'s will was probated 30 Aug 1794. He took a prominent part in the Revolution having served in the ranks and as an officer. He was a Lieutenant, 2nd class, 4th Co., 5th Battalion, of the Philadelphia Co., Militia under Captain John Cope. He was a founder and a Deacon of the Indian Creek Reformed Church in 1753 and 1754. He served on the Consistory for at least from 1768 to 1776, if not for a longer period. In advanced years, Jacob Leidy, Jr. and his wife "!in consideration of love and affection which they had from their sons and to put them in a good way of living and also for further considerations of a small sum of money" they divided their farm or plantation into two equal parts. One part, consisting of 121 acres of land and buildings, was conveyed to their youngest son, John; and another part, also consisting of 121 acres of land with buildings, including the old homestead and gravey+-ard, they conveyed to their son, Jacob.

Bio Jacob Leidy, the second child of Jacob Leidy, the immigrant, was born in Germany, July 23, 1719 and died in Franconia Township, Montgomery Co., Pa., Aug. 18, 1794. He was a prominent man in the affairs of the Township: an early and extensive land owner in this section, and founded the old Leidy homestead. Here in 1788, was started the first Leidy tannery by Jacob Leidy, the third. Jacob Leidy served as an officer in the American Revolution and was Lieutenant of the Franconia company of the Phila. Co. Militia. His company of troops in their first three years of service belonged to the First Battalion: and in the second three years service belonged to the Fifth Battalion of the Phila. Co. militia, under the command of his brother-in-law, Lt. Col Jacob Reed, of Hatfield.

Jacob Leidy married Barbara, a daughter of John (Neiss) Nyce. She was born in 1723 and died May 14th, 1798. The had eight children as follows: John Jacob married Veronica Schell; Catherine, married Frederick Fluke; Margaret; ,married Jacob Hengen; Anna Maria, married 4 Feb 1768 Andrew Reed of Marlborogh Township; Elizabeth, married 28 Sept 1772 Phillip Nyce; Magdalena, married John Fluke, and Barbara, married 18 Apr 1776 Rev.
