Lieut. Newton Mount

Newton Mount served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company D, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He entered service on 22 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep1861 in Cairo, IL with the rank of Private. On 5 Jan 1864 in Big Black, MS. he re-enlisted as a Veteran and was promoted to Sergeant Major and transferred to the Non-Commissioned Staff company. On Jan 5, 1864 he was further promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred back to Company D. He died of wounds received near Atlanta, GA and was buried in Marietta National Cemetery.
