About Lieutenant Garland Overton Carr
Lieutenant Overton Carr was a member of the United States Exploring Expedition from 1838-1842. He served as the executive officer on the flagship, USS Vincennes.
In August 1841, he took command of the USS Oregon after its purchase in Astoria, Oregon. USS Oregon sailed with the rest of the squadron on 1 October 1841 and arrived at Sandy Hook, New Jersey, on 30 June 1842.
Lt. Wilkes gave the name Cape Carr to a prominent, ice-covered cape in Antarctica.
