In August 1994, four years before Clinton's impeachment, Linda Tripp became a public affairs specialist at the Pentagon. Monica Lewinsky was working there after being a White House intern. The two reportedly became friends.
Tripp surreptitiously recorded talks between her and Lewinsky, who disclosed she had had an affair with Clinton; those tapes later playing a major role.
Tripp would later turn the tapes over to Kenneth Starr, the independent prosecutor investigating the president.
