About Lisanby Nance, Sr.
How did this man spell his name? Le, Li, ss, s, en, on & om are some of the variations of how others recorded his name. The transcriber of his father's Bible even gave it the unique spelling of Sofronby. Thanks to courthouse fires, legal records are of little help. In two places where his name is literally chiseled in stone, it is spelled Lessomby but cemetery markers aren't always right. So his Memorial has 2 spellings, Lessenby from family records and Lessomby from the cemetery markers.
During his life, Lessenby was a farmer, a Trigg County Representative & a General in the Army. He was born in Leatherwood Creek Valley to Reuben Nance & Nancy Brown.
Circa 1826, he & his first wife, Oney Sims, & 2 of their children, William & John, migrated to Roaring Spring Trigg County KY where 3 more children were born; Jane, Virginia & Edmund.
Following Oney's death, Lessenby married Mary L Hagood. To that union 5 children were born; Saunders, Peyton, Reuben, Susan & Mary.
Circa 1853 he continued his migration west into the Jackson Purchase and settled in Graves County near Mayfield. His final resting place is an unnamed cemetery off New Hope Church Road.
