In 1933, my mother's Aunt Rosa Erlanger Elsberg, then 54 years old and living as a widow or single woman, accompanied my mother Liselotte Erlanger, then 18 years old, to America when they first fled from the Nazis; their visa was vouched for by Rosa's brother (Liselotte's uncle) Arthur Erlanger, who lived in New York City. Lilo told me that her papers "were not in order" and she had to return to Europe. She again came to America in 1938 -- catherine yronwode
