About Lorenzo Butler Hickok
He was the greatest, most lovable character and I have never met his equal in the homely character that go to make good citizenship, honorable, thoughtful, unselfish, brave and unassuming. He was a bachelor, a plainsman and in early youth was called 'Billy Barnes.' He was celebrated as one of the best wagon masters in charge of the Great Government trains with all their responsibilities. He became famous for his courage, ability to command men, to defend the interests of his employees, to stand off the Indians and bandits that preyed on the wagon trains, and for his control of the dare-devel sprits who drove the teams." He later returned to Troy Grove to become a surveyor.
