Red River Trains Attacked by Sioux on their Return -- Two Men Killed.

A Letter from James McFetridge, Collector of customs at Pembina, Dated Aug. 22, to Messrs. Culver & Farrington has the following news:

"Dear Sirs: I have got home all safe in twelve days from St. Paul, but am sorry to say, that all the parties did not, as Soiux killed two of our men on the plains about one day from St. Joseph. One of the men you know, that is the man that had charge of Henry Fisher's carts, Busquer: and the other mans name was John Beads. There were four in the party; two escaped. They had left the carts and started on ahead for Pembina, when they were overtaken by the Sioux, nine in number , and fired upon. Our carts have not arrived yet, and we begin to feel alarmed about them. I am going to send out a party of men to meet them. Judge Johnston starts from here to-morrow for St. Paul. Rolette has not arrived.

  • ************************************************** John Beads was with Dr. John Rae on his two searchs for Sir John Franklin in the Arctic, the second one which ascertained the fate of Franklin. — looking for recommendations.....A bit more on Williain married Julienne Bousquet daughter of Louis Bousquet and Bersey Fisher. Louis Bousquet was a protege of Bishop Provencher from the age of four years old, when he was placed under his guardianship. He became a member of the St. Boniface Cathedral Choir, and taught at Provencheis school as a teacher before the Grey Nuns administration. He later became a petty magistrate, appointed by the Council of Assiniboia. Betsey Fisher was the daughter of Henry Fisher, Chief Trader of the Hudson's Bay Company and later a member of the Council of Assiniboia. See also Dorge, 'The Metis and Canadien Councillors of Assiniboia' Part I, The Beaver, (Summer 1974). 18; and Dorge, 'The Metis and Canadien Coundllors of Assiniboia' Part I1 in The Beaver, (Autumn 1974). 39-45. William moved to Batoche in 1881, where he became a merchant. He did not support the Rebellion, and was arrested with Charles Nolin, who had successively married female relatives of both Louis Riel and Maxime LPpine, and who opposed Riel in 1869-70 and in 1885. See Stanley, et al., eds., The Collected Diaries ofLouis Riel Vol. V, 227-8 ........ Karen Nilsson Arcand Thanks Karen, but that info is not correct. Here is the info from Find A Grave. He is buried in Pembina, his name is on the monument. I think that St Boniface is the St Boniface Parish District (Big area at the time). I'm thinking when people see St Boniface Parish District, they think it's St Boniface (now part of Winnipeg, Manitoba) I have to find a map and post it. The info in Find a Grave is correct. *****Birth: 1825 Death: Aug. 20, 1858 Pembina Pembina County North Dakota, USA son of Louis Bousquet and Marie (...), husband of Elizabeth Fisher, age 33 years (killed by the Sioux).
