BIOGRAPHY Louis Engelbert was born in Paris on 22 November 1701, the son of Comte Louis Pierre Engelbert de La Marck, Graf von Schleiden, baron de Lumey, and Marie Marguerite de Rohan-Chabot, Mademoiselle de Rohan. He chose a military career, rising to lieutenant-general in the French army, and governor of Cambrai and the Cambrésis. Like his father he was a grandee of Spain.

On 30 June 1727 he married Marie Anne Hyacinthe de Visdelou, dame de Bienassis, daughter of Renaud François de Visdelou, vicomte de Bienassis, and Marguerite Iris de Poix, dame de Fouesnel. Their daughter Louise Marguerite became her father's heiress, as her brother Louis Jules died as an infant. His mother died in 1731 within days of giving birth to him. In 1744 Louis Engelbert married Marie Anne Françoise de Noailles, daughter of the marshal of France Adrien Maurice de Noailles, 3.duc de Noailles, and Françoise Charlotte Amable d'Aubigné, dame de Maintenon. However the marriage did not result in progeny.

In 1760 the Hôtel de la Marck was built for Louis Engelbert and his second wife Marie Anne Françoise de Noailles on the site of the old market of Aguesseau in Paris. It stands between the rue d'Aguesseau and the rue de Surène.

Little else is recorded about Louis Engelbert. In 1773 he granted permission for the building of a parish church in Schleiden provided that it was used in turn for services by the Lutheran and Evangelical faiths. He died in Fleville, Nancy on 5 October that year.

In 1748 his daughter Louise Marguerite had married Charles Marie Raymond, prince et 5.duc d'Arenberg. On her father's death she brought the county of Schleiden and the land of Saffenburg to the house of Arenberg, and the line of La Marck became reunited with the house of Arenberg after seven generations.
