About Louis Hulke
Louis Hulke came to America in about 1874 when he was 19 years old. According to the records, it looks like both of his parents had died the prior year. He had no siblings, just half-siblings and most of them were already in America. My mother, Martha (Hulke) Franke, thought he left Germany because he had flat feet and couldn't serve in the military in Germany and anyone who couldn't serve was ridiculed. My mother also told me that Louis needed to go to the "Land Office" in St. Peter (Nicollet County) to be able to purchase the farm in Yellow Medicine County. Could that have been because he had half-brothers living in Nicollet County who may have helped him find that farm? Louis became a US citizen in 1897 as recorded in 12th Judicial District Court of Yellow Medicine County, MN.
