Tragedy struck this man and his family on 6 August 1898, when his first wife, (Heila Magdalena Hendrina), two of their children, (Isabella Catharina Sophia - 4 months old, and Theunis Daniel Jacobus - 5 yrs) and his father-in-law, Matthys Petrus Greyvenstein) were killed in a train accident at a level crossing near Albert junction, Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape.
