July to September 1943: Registration of death of Louisa H. Grahame; aged 78 [born about 1865]; in Kensington (Volume 1a, Page 133)
A verdict of Accidental death was recorded at a Hammersmith inquest on Wednesday, 14 July 1943 on Miss Louisa Grahame, age 75, who died from burns through her nightdress catching fire in her flat at [Queen's Gate Terrace, South Kensington, London SW7 5PX 51.4986837, -0.1821732].
Miss Everilda Lawford, proprietress of flats in Queen's Gate Terrace, said that Miss Grahame had occupied a single room. She was in the habit of making a cup of coffee for herself in the morning. About 6 a.m. on Thursday, 8 July 1943 she found her lying on the floor of her room which was full of smoke.
Miss Maudie McNulty, living at the flats, said that on the morning she heard Miss Grahame calling her and going into her room, saw her sitting on an armchair with her nightdress alight. The armchair and carpet were burning. Witness extinguished the flames and burnt her hands doing so. A gas ring and gas stove were alight, and witness thought that in going to the gas meter Miss Grahame caught her nightdress against the lighted gas ring.
Evidence was given that she died the same day in St Mary Abbots Hospital, Marloes Road, Kensington, London 51.497676, -0.190909. Dr. D. Teare stated that death was due to toxaemia from extensive burns.
