She was a Midwife who made apple pies everyday. She made Sarah Leila Evans Payne(her daughter in law) to peel cabbage. Sarah was
pregnant with Ina and would peel them under the high porch...Sarah kept underneath the house swept clean and would sit there where it was
cool because she was nauseaus a lot of the time during the pregnancy.
Every kid black or white that would come into the store, if they were barefooted she'd put on socks and shoes and wouldn't bill them but never lost a penny because they'd come back in later with eggs, chickens, etc. Used to keep her money in flour sacks and hid under a rug
She was o.k. as long as she wasn't around Ella (her daughter)
Committed her husband Thomas to Milledgeville,GA mental hospital (see his profile)
Had a country store in Jackson county after
husband died. Stocky woman.
Midwife- she kept a buggy and would even go at night when necessary. She went thru a covered bridge one night while some men were waiting to rob the next passer by. She cracked a whip, one hollered and got kicked by the horse and fell in the water and she'd carry a lantern too.
She raised Matt Payne's kids after their mom died.
She drew a pension from her husband's Civil War service.
stayed with George her son until Nora and Dewitt died and then left saying it wasn't the same around here since they died- She left George to take care of Judy (Finnie Belle) Archer while Judy was sick as a child
Living with her grandson Clarence when she died
