BIOGRAPHY Daughter of Philippe Levêque de Vilmorin and Mélanie de Gaufridy de Dortan, Louise Levêque de Vilmorin was born 4 April 1902 in Verrières-le-Buisson. In 1923 she became engaged to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who in the French army had obtained a pilot license and had been offered a transfer to the air force. However, Louise's family objected and he declined, taking a desk job in Paris and began writing. The engagement was broken off and he continued to write, his most famous work was _The Little Prince_ published in 1943. On 31 July 1944, having taken off from Sardinia to fly over southern France, his plane disappeared, eventually it was found May 2000 in the sea south of Marseille.

Louise de Vilmorin married Henry Leigh-Hunt 12 March 1925 in Paris. They moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and became the parents of three daughters. They divorced 12 February 1937 and she returned to Europe. She became the fifth wife of Count Pál Pálffy ab Erdöd on 27 January 1938 in Bratislava but they divorced in 1943. Count Pál Pálffy married a total eight times, he had been the second husband of Countess Maria von Wurmbrand-Stuppach, known by the name of her sixth husband as Etti Plesch, who owned two Epsom Derby winners. Etti's third husband was Count Tamas Esterházy de Galántha but he left her in 1942 to become the lover of Louise de Vilmorin but they never married.

Duff Cooper was British ambassador in Paris from 1944 to 1947, and became the love of Louise's life. In 1952 Duff Cooper became the first Viscount Norwich. Louise was a novelist, poet and journalist, her most famous novel was _Madame de_, published in 1951, which was filmed in 1953 starring Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux and directed by Vittorio de Sica. Her other works included _Juliette,_ _La Lettre dans un taxi,_ _Les belles amours,_ _Saintes-Une fois,_ and _Intimités._

Louise's last affaire was with André Malraux, a French statesman. She died 26 December 1969 at Verrières-le-Buisson. After her death, her letters to Jean Cocteau were published.
