Loyd Bowen, age 86, of Malvern, Iowa formerly Imogene, Iowa passed away Monday, September 19, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak, Iowa. Loyd was born May 9, 1930 in Kelton, Texas the son of Noel Nathan and Mary Alice (Gifford) Bowen. Over the years the family lived in Texas, Colorado, and Utah. Loyd served in the United States Army during the Korean War in the Headquarters Company 116 Engineers, Combat Battalion as a Radio Communications Chief. Loyd was united in marriage to Gladys Trautman on August 2, 1953 in Shamrock, Texas. They lived in New Mexico until moving to the Henderson, Iowa area in 1959. They moved to their farm near Imogene, Iowa in 1960 and Loyd recently moved to Malvern, Iowa. Over the years Loyd worked in many jobs including hauling uranium ore out of the mines in Moab, Utah, drove trucks for many years, was a mechanic, and loved custom wheat harvesting working the wheat fields for over 24 years. Loyd was a member of the Levi Burton American Legion Post #575 where he served as Commander, was a member of the National Farmers Organization, member of the Oaks Community Church, and was active at the Emerson Senior Citizens. He enjoyed tractor pulling, playing cards, visiting with people and was a good friend to everyone.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife: Gladys Bowen; brother: Nathan Leroy Bowen; sister: Joan Humphrey; and sisters-in-law: Grace Trautman and Dorothy Hill. Survivors include his children: Ron Bowen of Imogene, IA; Luann Hughbanks of Council Bluffs, IA; Carol Bowen of Malvern, IA; and Suzanne Lees and husband Paul of Walnut, IA; grandchildren: Brianne Marsh (Jody) of Neola, IA; Bethany Reynolds (Jason) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Brandon Hughbanks of Oakland, IA; Erika Lees of Maryville, MO; and Blaine Lees and Ashley Lees of Walnut, IA; great grandchildren: Madeleine, James, and Elizabeth Marsh; Camden Hughbanks; Dakota, Layla, Kaydee, Trevor, and Lilith Reynolds; twin brother: Floyd Bowen and wife Virginia of Hastings, IA; brother: David Bowen and wife Virginia of Knox City, TX; brother-in-law: Wendell Hill of Phoenix, AZ; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Faith Community Church. Burial will be in the Emerson, Iowa Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 6-8 PM Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Oaks Community Church, Indian Creek Museum, or the Levi Burton American Legion Post #575.
