About Lt. Col. Thomas Joseph Garvey

GARVEY, Lt. Col. Thomas J. Lt. Col. Thomas J. Garvey (Retired U.S.A.F.) 78, of West Falmouth, MA, died Thursday, (July 1, 2004) at his residence. He was the husband of 58 years to Theresa A. (Taylor) Garvey.

Mr. Garvey was born in New Bedford, MA, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Cawley) Garvey, and graduated from New Bedford High School and Providence College. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1945 and was recalled in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. During his Air Force career he served in the Strategic Air Command as a Command Pilot at Hunter AFB in Savannah, GA and Otis AFB in Bourne, MA. He also was computer manager at SAC Headquarters in Omaha, NE.

After his retirement from the Air Force in 1970, he worked as a computer manager at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in E. Hartford, until retiring to West Falmouth in 1984.

He loved to read, play golf, watch sports and play bridge.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, Thomas J. Garvey of Omaha, NE, Neal M. Garvey of Tallahassee, FL, Mark P. Garvey of Farmington and James T. Garvey of S. Windsor. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 6, 11 a.m. at Saint Elizabeth Seton Church, Quaker Road, North Falmouth. Burial will follow at the Veterans Administration Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Visiting hours at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth Center on Monday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut St., Suite 301, Brockton, MA 02401.
