About Lt-Gen Hon Henry Edward Butler
Butler, Hon. Henry Edwars - Lt.-General (1780-1856) From The Annual Register 1856 - Chronicle p. 285 7th December – At Paris, aged 76, Lieutenant-General the Hon. Henry Edward Butler, 2nd son of the 2nd Earl of Carrick, and uncle of the present Peer. He served in the Egyptian campaign and the Peninsular War. This gallant veteran was Colonel of the 55th Foot, but better known as the father of three heroes who fell in their country's service within a space of six months. His eldest son, Henry Thomas Butler, was a captain of the 55th Foot and served as Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General in the Crimean expedition and was killed at Inkermann. His 2nd son, Charles George Butler, captain of the 86th Foot, died in India in 18th December 1854 aged 31. His 4th son, James Armar Butler, captain in the Ceylon Rifles, was the hero of Silistria, but did not live to receive the honours which awaited his colleague Lt. (now Major) Nasmyth, in England for the gallant and successful defence of that fortress. He died from fatigue and sickness 22nd July 1854, aged 27.
