Pertinent text, p 57:
"JOHN THOMPSON
"FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT
"Like so many other towns, Fairfield had a John1 Thompson among its early settlers. Of his origin, nothing is known. He died in 1657, the inventory of his estate being taken in June of that year. The probate records mention his widow and state the ages of the four children: Elizabeth (13), Mary (8), John (6), and Hester (3). The widow Elizabeth made a marriage covenant, 25 Dec. 1657, with Daniel Finch of Fairfield, and died the following year. Francis Hall and George Godwin were appointed feofees, and at Godwin’s death, William Heyden was appointed in his place. When Elizabeth Finch died, Hall and Heyden succeeded her as administrators.
"Heyden appears to have mismanaged the estate; at all events, after his removal to Westchester County, N. Y., the Thompson heirs sued his estate, and recovered judgment. On 4 Apr. 1672, in the record of a sale from Robert Turney to John Wheeler, one of the boundaries mentioned was 'land of John Tomsons Children somtimes the land of Willm Hayden.' On 28 Jan. 1673 [1673/4], Elizabeth wife of Thomas Bennet, Mary wife of John Bennet, and Ester Tomson had land recorded which was theirs 'by vertue of execution in Will m Haydens estate'; and John Bennet purchased from Thomas Bennet a third part, and from Hester Tomson a third part. The homelot, however, came into possession of Thomas Bennet, who in 1687 conveyed to his son Thomas the homelot that was once John Thompson’s.
"Thomas Bennett, Jr., in the Disbrow witchcraft trial, 1692, mentioned his uncle John Gruman, Sr.; while John Gruman, Jr., in 1701 referred to his uncle, Sergt. John Thompson as administrator of the estate of his father John Gruman, Sr.
"Children of John and Elizabeth (____) Thompson:
"+i. Elizabeth 2, b. abt. 1644; m. Thomas Bennett.
"ii. Mary, b. abt. 1649; m. John Bennett.
"iii. John, b. abt. 1651; d. 1 Mar, 1734 ae. 83 (g.s.); Deacon, Fairfield Church; m. in 1684, Sarah Gold, b. abt. 1661, d. 4 June 1747 in her 87th year (g.s.), dau. of Maj. Nathan and Sarah (Phippen) Gold.
"iv. Hester, b. abt. 1654; m. John Gruman."
