Biography From Pierson Millennium (p 127-128) [1]

Joseph Pierson (Lieut.), was born (about 1640 ...) at Southampton, L. I.; was known as lieut.; and was active in settling the new town. He dealt with Indians for the town March 6, 1657/58; and at age 30, still single, he exchanged 20 acres of land in Southampton on June 19, 1670. He mar. Amy Barnes (probably the dau. of Joshua Barnes of Southampton), Nov. 17, 1675 (she died Oct. 3, 1692). After her death Joseph mar. Joana, wid. of Thomas Cooper. In 1681, Joseph had cattle earmarks registered at Southampton, the cattle probably being inherited from his father who died the year before with about 53 head of cattle on hand. In 1682, Joseph was elected as one of Southampton's overseers including responsibility for preparing the Town Estimate in 1683 along with John Foster, John Jagarr, and John Howell, Jr. Of the 143 individuals listed in the estimate, three were Piersons: Benj. Pierson £51, Joseph Pierson £127, and Henry Pierson £136. Of Joseph and his two brother Benj. and Henry, only Joseph spelled his name Pierson at that time. In 1686, Joseph was a townsman (Assessor, etc.) for Southampton. He received land grants from the town of Southampton in 1686 at Accobogue Meadows, and 1687 at the meadow at the beach and pines.

In 1687, Joseph owned one of the 14 whaling companies of 12 men each in the greater Southampton area who reported whale oil in their possession - two of them were : "Att ye Pines, Joseph Pierson & Co., 240 bbls" and his brother "Att Sagabonick, Lift Henery Peirson & Co., 276 bbls." "For generations before the settlers came, the Indians had cut up stranded whales blown ashore by shootins numbers of arrows into them. Companies were licensed to ship out off the south shore as 'adventurers on ye whayle designe,' the first in 1560." Joseph held Southampton town offices: in 1688 as Commissioner, Townsman, & Trustee; in 1692 as Viewer and surveyor of Highways in 1693 as Surveyor in 1694 as surveyor Highways and Fences and in 1695 as Trustee and the Town Rate. In the 1694 town records, he is called "Ensign" Joseph Pierson for the first time which title continued through the 1698 census prior to his death. An Ensign is an entry level Lieutenant and he was likely in the local colonial militia as was his brother Henry. In the 1696 Town Estimate for Southampton, the three Piersons listed were: "Theodore Pierson £38, Joseph Pierson £75, Col. Henry Pierson £130." In the 1698 Southampton town census, he was listed as "Ensign Joseph Peirson with children Henry, Joseph Jr., Mary, Ephraim, and Sam'll Peirson." His second wife Joana, widow of Thomas Cooper, is believed to have died before 1698 since she does not appear in the town 1698 census. After 1698, Joseph was mentioned two more times in Southampton records (both times as Lieutenant): 5 Dec 1700 "Jeremiah Culver was married to Mary Pierson ye daughter of Left. Joseph Pierson;" and 23 Feb 1706/7, "Mary Culver daughter of Left. Joseph Pierson, and wife of Jeremiah Culver departed this life Feb. 23, 1706." On 21 Jun 1739, land at the 41 lots of meadow on the beach westward from Hill Bank to Dow Little were laid out for the owners who included in Lot 2 "The heirs of Joseph Pierson." This 1739 record applies to Joseph Pierson Jr. since in 1720 Jr. was no longer applied to official records with Jr's childrens' births. Thus Lieut. Joseph Pierson died between 23 Feb 1706/7 and 1720.

Joseph and Amy (Barnes) Pierson had chd. Amy, b. Oct. 28, 1676; Henry, b. Apr. 17, 1678; Mary, b. June 12, 1680, mar. Jeremiah Culver 1700; Joseph, b. Aug. 6, 1684; Ephraim, b. Jan. 20, 1686/7; Samuel, b. Feb. 24 1689/90.
