About Lt. (j.g.) Thomas Sergeant La Farge, USCGR, artist

  • During World War Two, Thomas commanded the United States Coast Guard cutter Natsek. As of late January 1943 the ship, was a crew of 24 men, was overdue in the North Atlantic by several weeks. Lt. (j.g.) La Farge served in the Coast Guard Reserve and had extensive experience cruising the coasts of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Labrador, and Bermuda. As a civilian he had made several crossings of the Atlantic Ocean in sailboats. The 225-ton cutter, a converted fishing trawler, was 117 feet in length and had a beam of 23 feet. The Natsek was never found, and the cause of its sinking, with the loss of its entire crew, was not determined.
  • In civilian life, Thomas was a professional mural fresco and mural painter. He also created stained glass and mosaics. His grandfather, John La Farge, was a well-known artist; his father Louis Bancel La Farge, was an architect.
