Lucille Catherine Hodgeman

Lucille Hodgeman, a dancer and a choreographer, married lyricist, Jack Yellen, in 1944. She was born in Minnesota and raised in Los Angeles, where she worked with Twentieth Centry Fox and Metro-Goldwyn Mayer. Lucille partook in over 20 films, including The Wizard of Oz and The Prizefighter and the Lady.

Lucille Yellen, of Springville, the widow of renowned songwriter and Buffalo native Jack Selig Yellen, died Aug. 15 in Springville. She was 95.

Born Lucille Hodgeman in Minneapolis, she moved to Los Angeles with her family in 1920. There, she learned piano and dance. In Hollywood, she pursued her own show business career as a dancer and choreographer's assistant in musicals that were filmed in the 1930s and 1940s. Under her stage name Lucille Day, Mrs. Yellen was one of the first long-term contract dancers for 20th Century-Fox.

She also participated in the making of 20 musicals, including MGM Studio's 1939 classic, "The Wizard of Oz." Her work eventually led her to meet her husband, Jack Yellen, who wrote songs and screenplays for Hollywood musicals of the era. …
