About Lucius Julius Caesar, III

Lucius Julius Caesar (c. 134 – 87 BC) was a Roman statesman and general of the late second and early first century BC. He was elected Praetor of Rome in 94 BC. In 93 BC, as Propraetor, he was governor of Macedonia. In 90 BC he was made elected the highest office of Cousul of the Roman Republic.

Lucius Caesar and his brother, Gaius Julius Caesar Strabo Vopiscus, were killed in 87 BC during the Civil War between Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla.[13] After Sulla had left for the East to fight against Mithridates of Pontus, Marius returned from banishment and started executing his political opponents.[14] Lucius and Gaius were among his first victims.[13] According to Livy, their heads were displayed on pikes on the speaker's platform (the Rostra) in the Forum.

His children, by his wife Fulvia,[15] were Lucius Julius Caesar, who was consul in 64 BC, and Julia, who would later become the mother of Mark Antony.

Lucius Julius Caesar (known[by whom?] with the numeral "III"; c. 135 BC–87 BC) was a son of Lucius Julius Caesar (II), and elder brother to Gaius Julius Caesar Strabo Vopiscus. Lucius was involved in the downfall of tribune of Lucius Appuleius Saturninus in 100 BC and became praetor in 94 BC without being a quaestor and aedile first. Later he became Macedonian Governor.

Lucius became consul in 90 BC. During his consulship, he defeated the Samnites[citation needed]. Lucius proposed Roman Citizenship laws to allies who didn’t participate in the Social War against Rome in 90 BC. This proposal became known as the Julian Law. Later he became censor and due to the success of the Julian Law, became responsible for dividing new citizens into voting districts. His colleague in this was a former consul, Publius Licinius Crassus Dives (consul 97 BC) (father of triumvir, Marcus Licinius Crassus).

Lucius and his brother were killed together in 87 BC at the beginning of the Civil War by partisans of Gaius Marius. They died fighting in the streets. According to Livy, their heads were exposed on the speaker’s platform.

His children were Lucius Julius Caesar IV and Julia Antonia.

Lucius Julius Caesar

Lucius Julius Caesar (ca. 135-87 BC) was a consul of the Roman Republic in 90 BC. He was involved in the downfall of the plebeian tribune Lucius Appuleius Saturninus in 100 BC.

He was elected praetor for 94 BC without having been quaestor and aedile. Later he became governor of Macedonia.

During his consulship, he defeated the Samnites. Lucius proposed legislation (one of the Leges Juliae or "Julian laws") granting Roman citizenship to allies who didn’t participate in the Social War against Rome in 90 BC. Later he became censor and due to the success of the Julian Law, became responsible for allocating new citizens into voting districts. His colleague in this task was a former consul, Publius Licinius Crassus Dives (consul 97 BC) (father of triumvir, Marcus Licinius Crassus).

Gaius Julius Caesar Strabo Vopiscus

Gaius Julius Caesar Strabo Vopiscus (C. Iulius L. f. Sex. n. Caesar Strabo Vopiscus)(ca. 130-87 BC) was the younger son to Lucius Julius Caesar II and his wife Poppilia and younger brother to Lucius Julius Caesar III. His cognomina indicate he was possibly cross-eyed, and the surviving member of a set of twins.

In 103 BC, he was on a committee to supervise the implementation of the Lex frumentaria, an agrarian bill, proposed by tribune Lucius Appuleius Saturninus. Strabo became a pontifex in 99 BC; a quaestor in 96 BC and an aedile in 90 BC.

When the war between Sulla and Marius started, Strabo stood for the consulship, although he needed to be a praetor before. Sulla supported him and this caused great civil unrest.

Along with his brother he was killed fighting in the streets at the beginning of the Civil War by partisans of Marius in 87 BC. According to Livy, their heads were exposed on the speaker’s platform.

Caesar Strabo Vopiscus wrote at least 3 tragedies with Greek themes. These plays were Adrastus, Tecmesa and Teutras. Only fragments of the plays survive. According to Cicero, he was an orator known for his wit and humor. Cicero published a dialogue called De Oratore, in which Strabo explains why humor is important in speech.

He was an uncle to Lucius Julius Caesar IV, Julia Antonia and a great-uncle to Mark Antony, Gaius Antonius, Lucius Antonius and Lucius Julius Caesar V.
