Research Notes
Parentage
- No source has been found to confirm Lucretia's birth or the connection to David Senter and Susee "Susan" Chamberlain as her parents.
The available sources for the children of David Senter and Susan Chamberlain don't mention a child named Lucretia b. abt. 1779. Her birth location is disputed between Peacham, Vermont and New Hampshire. No birth registration has been found. In Census documents Lucretia consistently says she was born in New Hamphire. Lucretia marries William Dyer Weeks.
The main reference so far appears to be an unsourced notation in the bio of the Find A Grave Source, which names the father but the wrong mother.
- Find A Grave shows an unsourced birth location of Peacham, Caledonia, Vermont, however on census records Lucretia consistently says she was born in New Hampshire.
- Her marriage record shows her residence at that time to be Danville, Vermont. Her husband, William Weaks (Weekes) was residing in Peacham at that time. Was this information confused with where Lucretia was born?
A pre-internet source has been found that states David and Susan (Chamberlain) Senter are Lucretia's parents. There was a genealogical periodical called "The Second Boat" that was in print from 1980 to 1997. It was edited by Rosemary E. Bachelor, Mary H. Dormer, & Melinda. M. Langdon of Machias, Maine.
Two editions mention Lucretia Senter within the "Genealogical Queries" section. With both instances, her mention is stated as fact as a part of a query for information about William Dyer Weeks parents. Both were made by James C Babbitt of Glen Aubrey, New York.
From The Second Boat - v.5, no. 2 (Aug 1984):
SENTER - JOHNSON Rev. Col. Joseph Seater of Plymouth, NH, b. 2 Mar. 1722; d. 14 May 1798; m. Elizabeth Johnson, prob. dau. of Noah Johnson. Seek parents, anc. of Elizabeth, poss. traced to Woburn, MA.
WEEKS/WEAKS/WICKES - SENTER - CHAMBERLAIN
Need parents, anc. of William Dyer Weeks/Weaks/Wickes, poss. of Danville, VT, b. 18 July 1769; d. 27 Mar. 1850; m. Lucretia Senter b. 23 Feb. 1779; d. 7 Dec. 1871; dau. of David & Susan (Chamberlain) Senter.
From the The Second Boat - v.6, no. 2 (Aug 1985):
WEEKS - SENTER
Want parents, anc. of William Dyer Weeks b. 18 July 1769; d. 27 Mar. 1850, of Danville, VT; m. 3 Nov. 1799, Lucretia Senter b. 23 Feb. 1779; d. 7 Dec. 1871, of Plymouth, NH.
So here we have a Mr. James C Babbitt stating, prior to the public internet, that Lucretia is the daughter of David & Susan Senter, and that she was "of Plymouth" New Hampshire.
- To follow-up - Mr. James C Babbit appears to have died in 1988 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/40507221/james-charlton-babbitt Did he leave behind any source documentation regarding Lucretia Senter?
