Lick Skillet (became Oxford), Calhoun County, Alabama, United States
General Newton BANISTER (some records incorrectly show Sex: F) born October 10, 1849 in Oxford, Calhoun County, Alabama. Actually, he was born in "Lick Skillet" as noted below. NOTE: In 1852, Oxford, Alabama was the first city in Calhoun County to be incorporated. When the town was formed, it was originally named "Lick Skillet" about 1830. The name was later changed to "Oxford" due to the presence of a narrow crossing of Chocolocco Creek that allowed farmers to ford cattle from one side of the creek to the other. Up to 1970, it was all in Calhoun County, but now it includes areas in Talladega County.
